fic: tainted emotions; twilight; jasper; pg-13

Title: tainted emotions
Author: lily_268
Rating: pg-13
Characters/Pairings: Jasper (implied Jacob/Bella)
Short summary: Jasper manipulates everyone's emotions after Bella's final decision - but what are his own?
Note: This turned out WAY more vampire and Edward-sympathetic than I was expecting (since I'm Team Werewolf) and I hope it's shippy enough for [livejournal.com profile] infiniteskies & [livejournal.com profile] three_nails, who love Jacob/Bella. This is for them!

Alice can predict the future, but she’s rubbish at seeing signs. Perhaps it’s because she’s relied on her inner sight for so long that she’s neglected to notice how humans react. Their facial expressions, their body language, and all the words they do not say.

Alice looks for the big picture while Jasper, ever the soldier, is alert to even the slightest shift in mood, taking in minute details to be analysed. He knows from experience that the right interpretation of an enemy’s movement has saved his life. You won’t survive until the future if you can’t decipher the present, so he watches and waits and plan strategies in his head.

Jasper is not surprised when Bella leaves.

Alice learned the hard way that you can’t see the truth if the subject is in denial about it herself.

---

When the love of your life sees visions it’s hard to plan a date. You are only spontaneous if it’s a surprise to both of you.

So Jasper plans things, only to be greeted by an already appropriately dressed vision of dainty beauty. Or else, on a whim, he takes her hand in his as they run for days until they are laughing between grape vines, sipping stolen Californian wine.

They don’t do this as much, Alice doesn’t like spontaneity anymore. Surprises can be heartbreaking when you were expecting a future of bridesmaid dresses and happily ever afters.

---

Alice becomes a mental safety. Before saying anything he knows if he should refrain. It’s all in the pursing of her lips and the furrow in her brow.

He knows not to mention Debussy, motorcycles or wolves but he has to learn not to mention wool, Shakespeare or baseball because there is some twisted connection to her; she's tainted everything. He can’t know any of Edward’s reaction to these triggers, but Alice does and that’s enough to keep him silent for months.

Jasper starts speaking again when they are in Moscow, when the pale skin and dark locks of girls are covered by layers of scarves and hats. He knows that they are always hoping, always waiting for one of the shawls to fall away, for a smile to beam out from underneath the coverings and yell surprise.

He doesn’t know what to do with this hope; he’s never had anything like it before. In the end, he decides to leave it, but takes pains to point out all the blondes when they move to Stockholm.

---

Alice can’t see wishes or regrets. She sees possibilities, not lost chances. So Jasper spends his afternoons listening to the music as it floats down from Edward’s room. He hasn’t touched the piano in years and all the music he listens to now it new and it has a tinny, synthesized sound, like real notes no longer exist and only the echoes remain.

Jasper pretends to see the words on the pages in front of him but is actually reading the most fascinating novel of all – his memories. He remembers the hunt until he can smell the old fear as it beaded up on his victim’s brows when realization dawned. He watched their reactions to death with what could only be called morbid interest.

He always tried to kill them before they hit acceptance.

Humans are more sporting than bears and snow leopards, they use their cunning to think, plan and use tools. He understands why Edward hunted them for so long; the thrill must have been exhilarating. Jasper misses the challenge and the strength that came with leading a pack, deciding who stays and goes; who lives and dies.

If he could change his decision he would have killed Bella Swan the day she cut her finger.

---

He uses his ability to cross the line, one more reason to accept it as a gift. Alice will be please he’s added another notch in the plus column. If met by them, although he tries to avoid it, he persuades them to feel more...hospitable. He grins with his pearly white teeth at how truly easy it is sometimes.

He checks up on her and not even Alice knows what he does on these afternoons of dense fog. He was worried that Edward would hear it in his thoughts, but he seems to be filtering out everything lately.

Perhaps it’s for the best; he knows he doesn’t have the heart to tell him the names of the smiling children with long black hair. (Literally.)

Sometimes he growls from the woods, far enough for the dog to ignore (not that he would notice anything else with her yelling like she is.) Jasper never understands their arguments over dishes and report cards and electricity bills. He shakes his head in wonder when she looks worried if he’s out too late and looks at his feet shifting in the mud when they embrace as he shuffles, a mixture of hate and happiness battling within him.

Sometimes he wishes that everyone could have someone like Alice to love and be loved by. The world would be a better place – he’s sure of it.

But he understands that if it meant giving up his Alice...

The porch door closes and she’s walking out to hang laundry to dry so he moves farther into the shadows where her contentment can’t sink into him.

It’s easier when hate wins.

---

There were months, years even that he had to deflect Edward’s more dangerous emotions. He knew that Bella was safe from harm, but he cared more about his ‘indestructible’ brother than the simple human child.

As tough as it is, he knows that this is still the easy part - while she’s still alive. He doesn’t know how to stop Edward when she’s gone.

Luckily, Edward seems to hear some of Jasper’s frustration and after that he tries to make an effort. It’s not anything monumental, but it’s enough to make Alice smile.

When Alice smiles his world turns.

---

Sometimes an emotion is so strong he almost believes it’s his own, that he should be the one feeling guilty after seducing yet another small brunette with gentle, scared kisses while the whispers of another girls name are drowned out by the rain.

---

The first sign was her mood around him, the Other. She looked at him differently at times. She would slip when in crowds, knowing that he couldn’t easily distinguish moods between so many people and that Edward’s head would be swarming with voices. Sometimes he tries to remember and pick out which stream of raw feeling was hers, when did she start her betrayal. If he had known then what the future held...

...he would have taken Alice by the hand and run with her until their exhausted legs had crossed all the mountains, valleys and plains until they were standing still, staring at the sunset over a distant ocean.

Great fic! Double fun reading about both Jasper/Alice and Jacob/Bella.

When the love of your life sees visions it’s hard to plan a date. You are only spontaneous if it’s a surprise to both of you.

I love that you brought out how hard it must be for Jasper to be spontaneous.

sfjsflsasjf I'm floored. Literally.

This is so, so lovely! I love that you wrote it from Jasper's POV - it's nice to see how the Hales/Cullens would react to Jacob/Bella. *grin* If I quoted my favorite parts it would be the entire fic actually so I'll refrain from doing so.

And you should definitely post this at [livejournal.com profile] sortofbeautiful. ;)

Thank you so much, Lily!! ♥ ♥ ♥ I love it. And I love you. :D

Wow. Very lovely, and very angsty. *sniffles* Poor Edward & Alice.

This was really good. =] Jasper was written almost perfectly; and I love how he's tough and sorta mean [It’s easier when hate wins.
] but thought the cutest things like "When Alice smiles his world turns."

=] It's very Jasper.

I'm also very sad for Edward. He was portrayed pretty perfectly too.

I'm a bit confused on the last paragraph, though...I don't get it.

Alright, thanks. I was thinking it was something around those lines, but with the last night I thought it meant that on some off chance Alice had left too and by the last line he'd wanted to run away with her while he'd had the chance.
And then it talks about Edward reading minds and I wasn't sure if that was a comparison or not, because Edward can't read Bella's mind. =]

But I get it now, thanks.
