"What have they done to deserve such devotion?" His eyes lazily slid to where she rested against a boulder, her legs covering his torso. She gazed back at him through the short, stiff stalks of tundra grass with a dangerous intensity.

"What have they done to deserve such scorn?" She shifted her body across his minutely. Enough that he knew their discussion had turned from playful to hostile.

"C'mon, Katie, you know I'm just teasing. No need to get static." He tried, without success, to regain the friendly feeling they had enjoyed before by massaging her thighs with his palms. "But the polar bears are endangered, aren't they? And I'm not really feeling up to a swim in these waters just to snack on a seal."

"So, what you do is...population control?" She asked incredulously, her toes suddenly pointed into the permafrost, caging him.

"Humans can be really despicable creatures sometimes. I understand and respect the nobility of the wild." He resigned himself to this conversation, aware that they had to have it eventually. With less control than he would like, he crossed his arms behind his head to stare at the sky and accidentally let out an impatient growl.

"Humans have tamed their wild instincts; overcome the base desires to work together as a community, something many predators can't do." In a moment, she had maneuvered her body so that she was lying against him, resting her head on his icy chest.

"That may be the big picture, but there are a lot of nasty individuals." He tried to ignore the way her legs were now rubbing against his in concentrated circles, how her skin seemed to crackle with intention. But he too stubborn to delay this fight again, no matter how much he wanted her lips to move from his collarbone to devour the rest of him. "Who just happen to smell a whole lot sweeter than your little cub in the Arctic."

"I won’t end human life, Garret." In a flash, she had rolled over and he desperately missed the buzz of contact.

"I know. I'm not asking you to." Yet in the following silence he saw himself crushing her body against the boulder with deadly force and barely restrained the urge. "But sometimes I'm gonna have to leave for a bit, Kate." They both knew what he left unsaid: and I might come back with different eyes.

"I won’t wait for you." She shot up like a spark and was almost to the horizon before she answered.

"But you won’t leave your family."

"So if I were to come back?" He didn't dare breathe it out as more than a whisper, allowing himself the escape that she wouldn't hear it.

Her reply was carried back by the wind, "you'll have to take your chances, soldier."
